Therapy for Lesbians & Lesbian Couples in Durham, NC
I offer therapy to lesbians and lesbian couples in Durham and online throughout North Carolina — individual work, couples work, and the questions of identity, family, and belonging that can run through both.
I am a lesbian therapist, and I have built a practice where nothing about your life needs translating.
There is a particular experience of looking for care and finding yourself translated anyway — folded into an acronym broad enough that the particular disappears, or met by a therapist whose goodwill is real but whose imagination keeps reaching for a man who isn’t there.
Many lesbians have learned to do the extra work quietly: explaining, contextualizing, deciding which parts of a life are worth the effort of making legible.
Therapy should not require that work. Here, your life is the premise, not the exception.
What Brings Lesbians In
Some lesbians come with concerns that have little to do with orientation — anxiety, depression, grief, work, family, relationships, meaning — and want a therapist for whom this dimension of life will not require explanation: the wife mentioned without a beat of recalibration, the history understood without a tutorial.
Others come with questions closer to identity: a coming out that arrived late, after a marriage, after children, or after decades of a differently shaped life; the family who adjusted and the family who did not; the particular loneliness of being the only one in a workplace, a town, a pew.
And some come with the questions any thoughtful person may bring to the middle of a life — what matters, what has been outgrown, what might still become possible — and simply want to think them through somewhere nothing has to be explained first.
For lesbians of color, and for those whose lives cross more than one line of difference, the work of translation can multiply. My approach to multicultural counseling takes that complexity seriously rather than treating any part of who you are as a footnote.
Therapy can also make room for the intelligence of desire, the uses of anger, and the difference between being accepted and being fully known.
Therapy for Lesbian Couples
Lesbian relationships carry everything any relationship carries — money, desire, household labor, the argument that keeps returning — and some things particular to them: families of origin with uneven welcomes, the negotiation of visibility that never quite ends, deciding what marriage means when it was won within your own lifetime, and building family in a world that keeps asking follow-up questions.
Lesbian life can also make its own forms of kinship: friendships that become family, former partners who remain part of a wider community, and relationships built with fewer inherited models for what a life together should look like. These can be sources of resilience and belonging; they can also make boundaries, endings, and loyalties more complicated.
In couples therapy, the work is what it always is: understanding what keeps returning between you, what each of you is protecting, and what would make more honesty, security, and closeness possible — with a therapist for whom your relationship is a relationship, not a specialty exhibit.
How I Work
I am a Harvard-trained therapist with more than twenty years of experience, and I have worked with LGBTQ+ individuals and couples throughout my career.
Shared identity can spare you some explanation, but it is a beginning, not a method. What makes therapy work is the quality of attention: the capacity to listen closely, recognize a pattern without reducing you to it, and remain curious about what does not yet have language.
My approach is grounded in psychodynamic therapy: listening for the history beneath a pattern, the protection inside a way of coping, and what takes shape between us in the room.
In couples work, I also draw from Emotionally Focused Therapy, the Gottman Method, Imago Therapy, and discernment counseling, using each as a lens or tool rather than a script.
Begin Therapy
You do not need a reason that sounds sufficient to anyone else. We can begin with whatever is most present and see where the conversation leads.
